Data Engineer (Fitness App)

Our client is a publicly traded franchisor and operator of over 2000 fitness centers, primarily located in North America and serving over 14 million members. Around 3 million of those members also use the company’s mobile application.

Project Description

As our Data Developer you will be responsible for the successful delivery and on-going maintenance of high quality data development and automation solutions.  You will be responsible for the architecture, design, development, implementation, and maintenance activities of programs and applications by performing database architecture designs and supporting ETL procedures to move data to and from source systems.  This includes but is not limited to the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).  You will work in a team environment to architect, design, develop, and maintain the corporate enterprise data warehouse and ETL packages using IBM software as well as cloud analytic tools.

  • Design and develop efficient (ETL) processes to accommodate changes in source and target systems and new business requirements.
  • Enhance or re-engineer source and target system data and transformations to and from data warehouse models.
  • Make technical design and coding decisions under the advisement of management.
  • Propose schema additions and changes in support of new subject area development. Work with business users and Business System Analysts to determine and document detailed business requirements.
  • Adhere to development best practices, including procedures, standards and code maintenance.
  • Assist in development of project scope to include proposals, estimates, planning, schedules and documentation.
  • Participate in the review process involving architecture, design, and quality assurance work products to identify conflicts and ensure consistent implementation of business and functional requirements.
  • Collaborate with the PMO and Leadership on all aspects of the project lifecycle to include producing status reports, updating time tracking, collaborating across IS teams, tracking project progress, and mitigating risks.
  • Develop and deliver summarized findings of problems to management to recommend proposed actions.
  • Offer users and data warehouse operational support; resolve support tickets, and monitor alert queues and resolve identified issues within a timely manner.
  • Perform functional and integration tests, develop testing scripts, and guide others in testing. Track issues and coordinating retesting.
  • Ensure strict adherence to documentation best practices and change control processes.
  • Mentor junior developers, including interns, where appropriate.
  • Develop and give training on system functionality as needed.
Job Requirements
  • 5 years direct experience as a Data Developer with the majority of that time focused on ETL and data warehouse architecture, design and development.
  • Technical aptitude for software development and/or programming design and systems management.
  • Creates, executes, and documents unit test plans for ETL and data integration processes and programs.
  • Provides quality assurance support for analytic releases as needed.
  • Experience with Infosphere DataStage preferred.
  • Proficiency in strategic data modeling methodologies across various levels of granularity and optimized for performance and accessibility.
  • Expert level SQL skills including development of stored procedures, functions, triggers and views.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of data warehousing methodologies and best practices.
  • Direct experience with MPP and high performance data warehouse environments such as Netezza, Teradata or Exadata.
  • Direct experience with cloud service platforms like Snowflake or AWS Redshift.
  • Interaction with cloud analytics platforms like Tableau, Looker, Alteryx and others.
  • Experience with migrating on premise data warehouse data to a cloud database platform a plus.
  • Development experience using Big Data and data streaming tools like Apache Hadoop, Spark and Kinesis a plus.
  • Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with experience in resolving challenging situations in managing people and projects.
  • Adaptable with a focus on “Discipline of Execution” to ensure quality of deliverables, adherence to standards and continuous improvement of people, process and tools.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Prior consulting experience preferred.
  • Ability to work off-hours and provide on-call support as needed.
  • Experience working in a retail businesses (desired).
  • Experience working in franchised businesses (desired).
  • Possesses an understanding of payment processing and recurring payments (desired).
